EXERCISE MEDICINE

Working as a specialist oncology physiotherapist, with a particular focus on exercise medicine, I have witnessed people of all ages and diagnoses experience the benefits of exercise. No matter your ability or exercise experience, I can find safe and beneficial exercises to help you thrive. I use evidence based practice to support you at any, or all, stages of your Cancer journey.

Before treatment

A personalised exercise and prehabilitation plan with the aim of empowering you to optimise your physical function before cancer treatment starts. This will also allow you to create important exercise habits before undertaking your treatment.

During treatment

You will be supported to undertake a bespoke exercise plan during treatment, with the aim of keeping you active to minimise complications and achieve the best possible outcomes. National guidelines will be followed at all times, to determine the appropriate frequency and intensity of exercise. These guidelines are based on research that has shown benefits such as: reduced fatigue, reduced feelings of anxiety and depression, improved sleep quality, improved physical function and a reduction in risk of cancer recurrence.

After treatment

Following your cancer treatment, a personalised rehabilitation plan will be made with the aim of helping you to achieve goals that are realistic and meaningful for you. During this phase I will work with you to manage side effects of your cancer treatment, which may include scar tissue, axillary web syndrome, lymphoedema, and fatigue. Most importantly, we’ll focus on restoring your quality of life, and finding a new normal post-cancer.

Palliative rehabilitation

For anyone not undergoing curative treatment, physiotherapy can still be appropriate and beneficial for you. Evidence shows that exercise during this phase can maximise independence, comfort, and quality of life. I may not be able to add years to your life, but I do aim to add life to your years.
